Small charities spend the majority of their income on activities related to their mission (grants and charitable activities), followed by raising funds and governance.
In 2019/20, small charities spent more money as a proportion of their total expenditure on achieving their charitable mission (87% & 88%, compared to 85% in charities with an income of over £1m).
Small charities spent 3.6% of their total spending on governance (6.6% & 2.5%, compared to 0.5% of in charities with an income of over £1m).
